What you need to know about FCE:

FCE is an exam for people who can use everyday written and spoken English at an upper-intermediate level. It is an ideal exam for people who want to use English for work or study purposes.

In order to ensure our exams meet the needs of users, FCE and CAE have recently undergone a review and the examinations have been updated. The first session of the updated FCE and CAE exams took place in December 2008.

 

Reading

Writing

This paper consists of three parts and takes one hour. Each part contains a text and a comprehension task of some kind. There are 30 questions in total.

The texts are taken from newspaper and magazine articles, advertisements, brochures, guides, letters, fiction, messages and reports.

This paper takes one hour and consists of two parts.

In Part 1, you must answer the question, which is always a letter or email.

In Part 2, you must choose one of four questions. These may include articles, non-transactional letters, reports, essays, reviews and stories.

 

 
Use of English Listening

This paper consists of four parts and takes 40 minutes.

You will be tested on your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

The speakers will have a variety of accents. Background sounds may be included before the speaking begins to provide contextual information.

 
Speaking

This paper consists of four parts and takes approximately 14 minutes.

There are normally two candidates and two examiners. One examiner assesses, while the other gives instructions and talks to the candidates.

In certain circumstances, three candidates may sit the test together, which takes approximately twenty minutes.
